History

Prior to the Great Passage, Conjurers, Magicians, and Alchemists were held in little respect by those of the other Mysteries. Their skills, after all, were widespread among the rest of the Living; their special talents were seldom needed.

The Great Passage changed that.

Suddenly there was an entire world to be shaped. The Sorcerers of Technology and the Shapers of Magic were in great demand, building castles and keeps, cities and houses, furniture and toys. The highest of the rank, the Albanara, brought their talents to creating governments.

As time passed, Shapers began to specialize in one particular aspect of their craft. They became Stone Shapers and Wood Shapers and Gem Shapers. In order to maintain standards in their workmanship, ensure fair wages, and establish apprenticeship programs in their crafts, the various groups banded together to form Guilds.

The Guilds grew in power, either absorbing or forcing out the independent concerns, until they controlled all crafting of material goods in Thimhallan. This might have resulted in the Guilds demanding exorbitant fees for their labors had not the Church stepped in and controlled pricing. What it did result in, however, was the unfortunate severing of ties between the Shapers and those of the Ninth Mystery - Technology.

As the Sorcerers became more and more advanced in the art, the Guilds began to fear that their services would no longer be needed. It takes Life and several days to lovingly shaped a chair from a tree. With their tools the Sorcerers could put a chair together in a matter of hours. Because they expended hardly any Life in so doing, they were able to charge less for the article.

The Exclusionists was spreading the idea that Magic was good and Technology evil. The Guilds quickly began promoting this view. Angry, the sorcerers withdrew from the Guilds and formed their own close-knit group, determined to prove their worth to the world.

This was one of the factors leading inevitably to the Iron Wars.
