Mystery of Death

--- History --- Game Statistics --- Dark Arts ---

Those of the Ninth Mystery, the Forbidden Mystery, are called Sorcerers and Technologists. Each of these terms is thought of as being synonymous and interchangeable; both are now considered degrading.

The major divisions of the Death Shapers are as follows:

These classifications are used as general reference points for various individual studies.. Note that missing from these divisions are medical sciences. This is primarily due to the fact that Life Shaping was traditionally and adequately handled by the Druids, thus technology missed its application to this field altogether. Following the Iron Wars, however, the Sorcerers were forced to develop skills in medicine in order to survive. Advances in this area were classified as subcategory of Fire and Water.

History

The Shapers of Death or Technology came to this world with the other magi in the Great Passage. According to what the Church would have you believe, this class of magic has always belonged exclusively to the provinces of evil. However, that was not always so. In the old world, those of the Ninth Mystery were the scientists and tinkerers of their trade. It was they who fashioned the magical devices such as wands, golems, and swords.

Legend holds that the Border surrounding and protecting Thimhallan was fashioned by the Sorcerers of that time, although Church text tries strenuously to discount what they term a myth. After the First Rectification the power of the Technologist branches grew far beyond the powers of the other magi. Combining magic with mechanics, the Sorcerers created many remarkable and powerful devices.

Unfortunately the wisdom to utilize this power did not grow with equal speed. During the Iron Wars the Sorcerers' inventions took the form of engines of destruction. By Wars' end the people -- refusing to blame themselves for the terrible destruction -- blamed the Sorcerers. The catalysts encouraged this belief and used it to help unite a world left in shambles. The Ninth Mystery was banished, and those who practiced it were persecuted, hunted down, put to death, or sent Beyond. Everything the Sorcerers had made was destroyed, as were all their writings and books. (The Church first made copies of these texts, keeping them in the Font. Additional copies as well as many of the Sorcerers' inventions are believed hidden in The Mountain of the Duuk-tsarith.)
